World Health Organization

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has been in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1948. As such, over the years FIP has made considerable strides in its partnership with the WHO in order to expand initiatives that evolve FIP’s ultimate goal — improved well-being and health. FIP is in a unique position to advocate pharmacists’ and pharmaceutical scientists’ roles in the global health agenda.

FIP is committed to deliver the 2018 Astana Declaration by positioning pharmacists as one of the most accessible and effective providers of primary health care (PHC). Following the Astana Declaration, FIP, as the global leadership body for pharmacy, immediately acted to bring together leaders and professionals across all regions of the world to progress this imperative and consolidate the role of pharmacy in the PHC agenda. FIP held its first regional conference, focusing on how pharmacists across all sectors can deliver PHC, in Amman, Jordan, with support and participation from the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean. The conference brought professionals in the Eastern Mediterranean region together to highlight pharmacy as a clear driver for PHC that is high quality, reliable, accountable, comprehensive, integrated, accessible and affordable. It resulted in the Amman Commitment — the first regional pharmacy commitment to PHC. Following the regional conference in Amman in April 2019, FIP held a second one in October 2019 in Ankara, Turkey. WHO European Region representatives supported this event in a number of sessions organised throughout the conference. The conference amplified the priorities of regional health care by receiving support from the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the WHO Turkey Office. The Ankara Commitment to Action is a response to anticipate and deliver the next breakthroughs in pharmacy for better PHC across the European region.

FIP adopted and adapted the WHO/UNICEF Operational Framework for Primary Health Care to translate the vision of the Declaration of Astana into actions through the “FIP Commitments to Primary Health Care” programme.

FIP Regional Conference for the Eastern Mediterranean Region partners: Jordan Pharmacists Association and Eastern Mediterranean Regional Pharmaceutical Forum

The Jordan Pharmacists Association (JPA)

The Jordan Pharmacists Association (JPA) was founded in 1957 to serve and represent pharmacists and the pharmacy profession in Jordan. The JPA works closely with the Ministry of Health, regulatory bodies, authorities and other professional associations to assure the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care and services to the Jordanian population. The JPA aims to assure the development of the pharmacy profession, encourage scientific research, and regulate and develop pharmacy practice and services. One of the JPA’s top priorities is to protect and advocate pharmacists’ rights and best interests throughout different stages of their professional lives.

Following the 2018 World Health Organization Astana Declaration on Primary Health Care, the global imperative for further developing pharmacy’s place in primary health care has never been stronger. FIP works with its partners and members to bring together leaders and professionals across all regions of the world to progress this imperative. A conference, “Envisioning the future together: Transforming pharmacy for better primary health care”, was held in Amman, Jordan on 25–26 April 2019, which was FIP’s first regional conference, organised jointly with the JPA and supported by the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Pharmaceutical Forum.
